How to stop the Windows Prompt: "Did you mean to switch apps?"

When Windows app need to MFA authenticate, there are a few options to choose. If you have the Okta Verify app installed, you get an option called FastPass at the MFA prompt. If you click this, it opens Okta Verify for quick MFA verification. However, before Okta Verify opens, windows adds another step by popping up this "Did you mean to switch apps?" box, which I would like to suppress permanently. So far, I have tracked it down to something like the below 2 links, where you need to add a reg key specifically for the app and title it something that matches the app. The links below say that

  2. Did You Mean to Switch Apps - Hyperlinks in Microsoft Reader

    Hi,

I understand the inconvenience you are facing in Windows 10.

In order to understand the issue better, please answer the below questions.

    • Which browser do you want to use as default?
    • Do you want to turn off the Pop up to switch between apps?
As you are using multiple programs associated with protocols and file type (file extension), there is no option to turn off the pop up while opening a hyperlink, only you can escape to other program as it is Designed by Windows, however I would suggest you
to refer the below steps and check if it helps.

    • Press Windows + X keys, select Control Panel.
    • Select Default Programs, Select Associate a file type or a protocol with a program.
    • Associate the protocol (File extension) respective to your need of browser or a program and check.
Keep us posted to help you better.

Installation media boots to command prompt

I've just booted from known working install media to see exactly what it does when booting. The sequence of events is...

    1. Windows logo on a black screen
    2. circling dots appear beneath the logo
    3. light blue 'Please wait' screen with circling dots
    4. a command prompt window (very briefly)
    5. the initial Setup page appears

Do you see steps 1-3? If so, it appears you have stopped at step 4, suggesting that something on the disc cannot be read.

Does the disc boot properly in another machine? If so, try cleaning the laptop's drive lens then try booting from the disc again.

If not, make new install media with Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, either as a bootable USB, on an ISO that you can burn to another disc. At Step 8 in Option One of this tutorial you can choose between making a USB or an ISO.

How to stop the Windows Prompt: "Did you mean to switch apps?"

How to stop windows 8.1 upgrade prompt

Because at the time I made my first post I didn't know this article existed. Your post made me interested in figuring out exactly how hard it really was to disable the prompt. This article was the first google link I clicked on...

Actually it tells you how to do it via group policy as well. Also, I wouldn't put modifying one key in the registry above the user expertise of the common user on this forum. But if that is too hard there are plenty of google results that walk the user through it step by step or just provide the registry file for you so it is a simple double click and your done. My point was that Microsoft isn't exactly making the information to get rid of the prompt a secret, if they were as evil as you say, they would have made it impossible to disable.

I've got my facts right. Maybe you should check your facts before getting snarky with me again.
