Multi-Vector DDoS Attacks Are Becoming the Norm
47% of all multi-vector DDoS attacks were launched in Q4 '15

Statistics gathered by Neustar, Inc., a provider of real-time information services, shows that in the past year, and especially in the last quarter of 2015, multi-vector DDoS attacks have started to become a regular occurrence.

Details from the 2016 Neustar Security Operations Center Report reveals that attackers are starting to chain together different methods for launching DDoS attacks, either for reconnaissance, or for diverting company IT resources in different areas, so they can launch other types of attacks later on.

Multi-vector DDoS attacks are when an attacker quickly transitions from launching DDoS attacks from one form of DDoS attack (e.g.: SYN packets) to another one (Layer 7), and so on. These attacks are either launched one vector at a time, or in parallel, in order to confuse a company's IT department, strain their resources, and keep their attention on the wrong spot.

Distributed denial of service attacks are growing ever bigger. Here's what's causing them.
Last fall, we saw the biggest distibuted denial of service (DDoS) attack ever. This year we'll see even bigger ones. According to Akamai's latest State of the Internet Security report, here's what's behind them.

Behind today's DDoS attacks you'll find botnets and they're using the same old techniques hackers have always used to bring down your servers.

First, you should know that while the total DDoS attacks only increased by 4 percent from Q4 2015 to Q4 2016, there was a 140 percent increase in attacks greater than 100 gigabits per second (Gbps). In short, we're not seeing that many more DDoS assaults, but they are getting much worse.

Of the most recent mega 100Gbps attacks in the last quarter, most of them were directly attributed to the Mirai botnet. The Mirai botnet works by exploiting the weak security on many Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The program finds its victims by constantly scanning the internet for IoT devices, which use factory default or hard coded usernames and passwords...

Large CCTV Botnet Leveraged in DDoS Attacks

It all started with a small brick and mortar jewelry shop that signed up with us to help protect their site from a DDoS that had taken them down for days. By switching their DNS to the Sucuri Network, we were able to quickly mitigate the attack for them. It was a layer 7 attack (HTTP Flood) generating close to 35,000 HTTP requests per second(RPS) which was more than their web servers could handle.

Normally, this would be the end of the story. The attack would be mitigated, the attackers would move on after a few hours, and the website owner would be happy. In this case however, after the site came back up, the attacks increased their intensity, peaking to almost 50,000 HTTP requests per second. It continued for hours, which turned into days.

Since this type of long-duration DDoS is not so common, we decided to dive into what the attackers were doing, and to our surprise, they were leveraging only IoT (Internet of Things) CCTV devices as the source of their attack botnet.
