  1. How do I prevent one of my internal HDDs from constantly spinning up when not in use?

I have a ThinkPad with 3 storage drives. I have a HDD installed in one of them to store files that I don't use often, so I can free up the SSDs for the things that benefit the most from faster storages.

I have this issue in which drive would spin up even when I haven't accessed it for a long time. This is an issue on two fronts: 1. There's no need for the hard drive to be spinning. 2. Perhaps the most irritating, the noise. I live in an extremely quiet place and the sound of the hard drive spinning drives me crazy.

I've tried a couple of things to spin down the hard drive while not in use. I've gone to power management and set the option to spin down the hard drive to 5 minutes. While this does cause the hard drive to spin down, the hard drive would spin back up after a few minutes. I thought maybe there's some program accessing the hard drive. I've changed the drive letter so that if this was the case the program would not find the hard drive again. This didn't solve the problem. In a last ditch effort, I formatted the whole thing. Still, the hard drive would make up every few minutes. Surprisingly, this is not the case when I switch to a Linux distro. So, clearly, there's something going on in Windows that is causing the issue. As I've exhausted all my options, I don't know what more to do and I would appreciate if someone would help in this regard.

  3. HDDs not spinning down when idle

I have a recently built computer. This system has six drives, five of which are HDDs. The system drive is an SSD. Two of the HDDs are primary drives: one is for programs (mainly games) and the other is for media (videos, pictures, documents). The remaining three drives are backups, one for each drive. The issue is those remaining three drives don't spin down, even though they should be idle 23 hours of the day. Nothing should be accessing those drives.

The only reason this is an issue is that with five HDDs constantly spinning, my computer is fairly loud. I built it to be silent, and without them spinning it virtually is, with the exception of the PSU fan which produces little noise. I'm considering buying external enclosures for all of them, but I'd like to avoid this. My previous system which was running Windows 7 had no problem spinning down all idle HDDs. Any suggestions?

How do I prevent one of my internal HDDs from constantly spinning up when not in use?

Can I prevent a secondary HDD from spinning up when waking my computer?

I have a SSD as my booting hard drive. I also have a spinning HDD for large files and backups that does not need to run all the time. I have it on a timer, such that it spins down after being idle for 20 minutes. My issue is that it spins up each time I wake my computer, and each time I turn it on. I am using Windows 10 and my HDD is a Seagate Barracuda.

Is it possible to prevent my internal HDD from spinning up when I wake my computer from sleep?
