  2. Is it possible that the charging capacity of my battery increases? (according to battery report)

    Hello, M. Mako

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I’m sorry to hear that your laptop shuts down unexpectedly when unplugged. The battery capacity of your laptop may increase or decrease over time due to various factors, such as the number of charge cycles, the temperature, the power settings, and the usage patterns. But it may not match the battery percentage or time estimate displayed on your laptop. This can cause your laptop to shut down unexpectedly when unplugged.

Calibrating the battery is a process of resetting the battery’s power meter to match its actual charge level. This can help improve the accuracy of the battery percentage and time estimate displayed on your laptop. However, this does not increase or decrease the actual capacity of the battery, which depends on factors such as age, usage, and temperature.

To calibrate the battery, you need to fully charge it, let it rest for a few hours, then discharge it completely, and then charge it again. Some laptops have built-in calibration tools in the BIOS that can automate this process. Otherwise, you can manually calibrate the battery by following some steps:

    1. Modify your power settings to prevent your laptop from sleeping or hibernating too soon.
    2. Connect your charger and power the battery until it is fully charged.
    3. Leave your laptop plugged in and wait for the battery to cool down. This can take up to a few hours depending on your laptop and battery.
    4. Unplug your laptop and let it discharge until it shuts down automatically. You can use your laptop normally during this time, but avoid any heavy tasks that may cause overheating or excessive power consumption.
    5. Plug your laptop back in and charge it to 100% again without turning it on.
Calibrating the battery may help solve some of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop shutting down unexpectedly when unplugged. However, if the issue persists, it may indicate that there are other problems with your battery or power management system. Some of the potential problems and solutions are:

    • Battery wear: Over time, laptop batteries tend to degrade and lose their ability to hold a charge. This can lead to sudden drops in charge level or unexpected shutdowns. If your battery has worn out significantly, you may need to replace it with a new one.
    • Faulty battery: A faulty battery can exhibit abnormal behavior, such as showing increased capacity or failing to hold a charge correctly. In some cases, it might need replacement.
    • Driver or software issue: Problems with power management drivers or related software could also cause erratic behavior. Updating or reinstalling the relevant drivers may solve the problem.
    • Overheating: If your laptop is overheating when unplugged, it might trigger an automatic shutdown to prevent damage. Overheating could be due to dust accumulation in the laptop’s cooling system or a malfunctioning fan. Cleaning the air vents and making sure the fan is working properly may help.
    • Operating system or firmware bug: Rarely, bugs in the operating system or laptop’s firmware can cause such issues. Keeping your system updated can help mitigate potential bugs.
To address these issues, you may want to check with a professional technician or your laptop manufacturer’s service center for a thorough diagnosis and repair. Working with laptop batteries can be potentially hazardous, so if you’re uncertain about handling it yourself, seek professional help to avoid any safety risks.

I hope this summary helps you understand your laptop’s battery problems better. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

    Best regards

    Yuhao Li

    Acer battery won't charge

What if the battery unremoveable? Should I disassemble and remove it? also there is a switch underneath the case and around the RAM slot that prevent the laptop to turn on when the case is open and without the charger. Is that the same as removing the battery? although when turned on with charger, the laptop still see the battery. Thanks

I took the report, the design capacity was 41.440 mWh but full charge capacity is now 25.752 mWh. Is it that bad? Before this happened I believe HWMonitor also show the same number with 38% Wear Level.
    Here's the report file

How can I increase Full charge capacity of laptop?

Laptop is charging to design capacity, not full charge capacity

I have a laptop (Dell Inspiron 3541) with Windows 10. After running powercfg /batteryreport in PowerShell, I got a battery report (at %userprofile%\battery-report.html). However, the results didn't seem right. Here's a screenshot.

As shown by the battery report, my design capacity is 41,440 mWh, but the full charge capacity is 26,758 mWh (about 65% battery health). However, it also shows that it is charging to design capacity (154%), not full charge capacity.

Some other weird parts of the battery report:

My battery has never drained 80% in 40 minutes. 80% in 140 minutes is a much better estimate.

Over 60 years turned on and on AC in a week? I was running Linux a lot that week, but 60+ years is impossible.

Is this normal (for a Windows battery report)?
