How to Change the Group by View of a Folder in Windows 10 tutorial

The delay to reply was unrelated to this topic. I was preparing to add a disc drive. The preferred view is working now, and here is the step by step list of what I did, and it includes an additional step at the end. I also rebooted after each step.

    1. Reset all views to default.
    2. Rebooted.
    3. Changed the "My Pc" view to Details and set the "Group By" to [None]. But left everything else at default.
    4. Rebooted.
    5. "My Pc" view retained the selected setting, alphabetically ordered "Details" without grouping.
    6. Switched to Drive C:\, set it to "Details" and changed the column order to "Name, Size Type and Date". Grouping is available but not applied by the default settings.
    7. Rebooted.
    8. "My Pc" lost the settings, reverted to "Tile" and "Group by" was active again.
    9. Reconfigured to "Details" and set the "Group By" to [None].
    10. Rebooted.
    11. "My Pc" view retained the selected settings. Alphabetically ordered "Details" without grouping.

How to apply different View settings to folders of the same type...

You have to be aware of what FolderType is applied to a folder because Apply to Folders works on a per-FolderType basis. So you have to set Generic & Documents & Music & Downloads & Videos to Details (or whatever your previewed view is) as well as setting Pictures to Large Icons. Then, if a folder doesn't have its expected view, it's most likely becasue the wrong FolderType is applied & you can modify that vai the Customize tab in the folder's Properties dialog:

    Be Aware:
    • OneDrive folders have their own set of FolderTypes that appear identical on the Customize tab but are unique in the registry (the mandetory Status column distinguishes them from the "normal" equivalent type). These are the StorageProvider group (see below)
    • To the frustration of many, the Library & SearchResults groups are not modified by Apply to Folders.

Here's a full iist of the FolderTypes defined in the registry. You can create your own using the PowerShell at the top:

  4. How can I apply the "Group by" "Type" setting to all files within all folders in Windows 11?

Group by none is missing since Windows 11 tabbed file explorer downdate was applied

Recently my computer applied the latest Windows 11 downdate and now, when I do a file Save As, I can select a folder and have to save into but it applies the Windows preferred grouping. Previously I had group by none available on file explorer and when I applied it to all views, it would apply. Now the option is gone and saving files is much more tedious. I've manged to get File Explorer itself to group by none but all my File Save As dialog boxes are grouped by Windows ageing, which is useless to me.

Is this another feature downgrade that Windows 11 have introduced to further alienate me from their platform, or is there some way to get back my much more functional former format?
