Windows 10: Hard drive runs at 100% after boot

3 of us at work are having this issue - after booting our machines, the hard drive runs at 100%, effectively locking the system to unuseability. Also, it seems to be no single process, but a number of Windows processes such as:

• Service Host
• Windows Diagnostic Policy Service
• Windows Cryptographic Service
• Windows Update Orchestrator Service
• Microsoft CompatabilityTelemetry
• Windows Power Shell - this used a huge amount, in Task manager it ran up to 34% of the Hard Drive usage alone - the others all ran on between 1-10%.

SuperFetch used to chew up a huge amount as well, and reading on the forums and net, I turned the process off to see if that worked, but it obviously has not.


This issue only occurs after boot. It does not happen if you log in and log out. To get around it, I restart my machine before going home, but if it crashes I basically have to wait around 10 minutes before I can get enough control back to start opening the programs I need. Obviously we would like a solution to the process, but if not, are wondering if installing an SSD would fix this (we have hybrids in our machines at the moment). All machines have the same build, and not everyone with the same build is having these issues.

Disk Usage 100% after booting from another hard drive

Problem Overview

I decided to put my school hard drive into my home computer to migrate some VM's.
After booting into the school hard drive and moving the virtual machines, I had taken out the school hard drive, booted from my machines original hard drive.

Now I am getting long boot times, and 100% disk usage.
It also usually takes long to log in.

I believe this is a driver issue.

My home PC hard drive runs Windows 10
The school hard drive uses Windows Server 2012 R2

Troubleshootig Step Taken

I have tried using chkdsk /f and sfc /scannow
I even tried a system restore but it failed to restore.

 

Overclock your hard drive!!!

Heres a much easier hack that I realized quite a few years ago that really does work!

REQUIREMENTS:

• Hard drive with molex power connection.
• PSU with more than 1 strand that has molex plugs on it.
• Wire strippers, soldering iron if you're fancy, electrical tape if you're not.

STEPS:

• Take the strand of connectors from your PSU, and decide which one will be the donator for this overclocking adventure.
• Cut the yellow and orange cables, then twist them together.
• Find the power connector you've chosen as the overclocking connector, and release the orange cable from the connector. Now use your preferred method to bind them together, then place it back together.
• Plug in a drive and feel the speed!

Congratulations! You've just overclocked your hard drive!

 

Wondering about a second hard drive and installing Vista on it and also a ..

Annoying having to go into the bios each time though. And for me not a option unless i run 2 arrays.
