  1. File views, Group by date not very helpful: YESTERDAY and LONG TIME AGO .. that's it?

So, end of the year. Go go and look at some files over the course of the year and ask for a view that is GROUPED BY DATE. This is what you get for a year's worth of data:

    1. TODAY

    2. A LONG TIME AGO

OK. That's not very helpful. And actually I don't think last month was like really that long a time ago.

Is this something I'm missing or is this just poorly designed software?

Group by date (or month or ...) instead of "A long time ago" in explorer on windows 10

There seems to be no recent, current and clear answer to the simple question:

How can I FIX* the group by feature in the explorer in windows 10 so that it is actually grouped by time units in usable form?

    Current result:

    • Yesterday
    • Earlier this week
    • A long time ago

    Targeted result:

    • 2018 August
    • 2018 July
    • ...

    Or:

    • 2018.05.07
    • 2018.05.06
    • ...

*I'm having a hard time believing that there is no obvious option, first and foremost because it is absolutely useless for doing actual work.

    And just in case:

    Did you google it? Yes:

    • "Not possible" related to older Windows versions
    • "Use the arrange by ... " related to the pictures library

How to Change the Group by View of a Folder in Windows 10 tutorial

The delay to reply was unrelated to this topic. I was preparing to add a disc drive. The preferred view is working now, and here is the step by step list of what I did, and it includes an additional step at the end. I also rebooted after each step.

    1. Reset all views to default.
    2. Rebooted.
    3. Changed the "My Pc" view to Details and set the "Group By" to [None]. But left everything else at default.
    4. Rebooted.
    5. "My Pc" view retained the selected setting, alphabetically ordered "Details" without grouping.
    6. Switched to Drive C:\, set it to "Details" and changed the column order to "Name, Size Type and Date". Grouping is available but not applied by the default settings.
    7. Rebooted.
    8. "My Pc" lost the settings, reverted to "Tile" and "Group by" was active again.
    9. Reconfigured to "Details" and set the "Group By" to [None].
    10. Rebooted.
    11. "My Pc" view retained the selected settings. Alphabetically ordered "Details" without grouping.

  4. File views, Group by date not very helpful: YESTERDAY and LONG TIME AGO .. that's it?

Windows 10: Sorting Files in File Explorer without the Groupings of "A long time ago," "Earlier this year," etc.

I'd like the simple Details list view of my photo files, but I can't seem to turn off the categories I just named in the subject. That's a problem because I want to see all the sub-folders at the top of the list, followed by all the files, but the categories
split my sub-folders up so I can't easily drag-and-drop files into the folders I want. How do I turn off the date-range grouping view?
