Windows 10: External Drive Keeps Skipping Drive Letter E and Showing Drive Letter F - Disk Management...

Hi everyone,I'm facing an ongoing issue with my external SSD, as it consistently skips drive letter E and defaults to drive letter F every time I connect it to my computer. Despite attempting to fix it through Disk Management and changing the drive letter back to E, it only provides a temporary solution. Once I reconnect the SSD to my computer, the same problem arises again.This issue is crucial to me as I have much audio program linked to my ssd with drive letter D, and due to the SSD taking the letter F, my audio program setup becomes disorganized.Has anyone experienced a similar persisten

help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.

 

Drive letter is skipped

Windows 11, about 2 weeks since install, trouble every day.

The boot drive is connected via SATA-0 and a data drive connected via SATA-1 The second drive is shown at drive E. It used to be D. I want it to be D. Following a web page:

Log in as administrator

Right click Win icon -> Disk Management

Right click on drive TERABYTE (E -> Change drive letter and paths

The E drive is the only one displayed. Highlight it and click button Change

In the field to the right of text “Assign the following drive letter, click the drop down arrow.

The list presented is: A, B, E, H, J

C is taken. D and I are not displayed.

What steps are needed to get D and I added to the list?

 

How in WIN 11 do I change the drive letter of the CD/ROM drive?

So this is what worked, step by step.

Reboot

Drive is listed as E: in file explorer.

Drive not listed in Disk Management.

Insert DVD, it plays after short pause.

Disk management now shows Audio CD as E:

Right click, change letter to R: (while playing!)

Reboot.

Drive now shows as BD-RE drive as R: in File Explorer.

The bottom line is

- File Explorer does not provide for changing drive letter afics.

- Disk Management seems to need a disk to be in the drive for it to "see" the drive. I can't recall is this is Win 10 behaviour

I don't recall having any difficulty with this in Win 10 (its possible that the Win 10 default drive allocation was "after" my external drives; or I "just changed it").
