Explorer crashing when switching between virtual desktops

Explorer regularly becomes unresponsive and after a minute or two restarts when switching between virtual desktops. I've not noticed any other patter to this, a restart fixes it for a while but then the problem returns.

  2. Switching Between Virtual Desktop Not Working

    Hi Hobbesters,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

If you're experiencing issues with switching between virtual desktops after your laptop sleeps, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue. Here are some suggestions:

    1. Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date. Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can cause issues with display-related functions. Visit the website of your laptop's manufacturer or the graphics card vendor to download and install the latest drivers.

    2. Reset the virtual desktops. To do this, right-click on the Taskbar and select "Task view". Then, click on the "New desktop" button to create a new virtual desktop. After that, close all the virtual desktops and try switching between them again.

    3. Windows Desktop Manager Service: Restart the Windows Desktop Manager service. Press `Win + X` and select "Task Manager." Locate "Windows Explorer" in the list, right-click on it, and choose "Restart." This will restart the Windows Desktop Manager service.

    4. Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. If a problem doesn't happen in safe mode, this means that default settings and basic device drivers aren't causing the issue. Observing Windows in safe mode enables you to narrow down the source of a problem, and can help you troubleshoot problems on your PC. Start your PC in safe mode in Windows - Microsoft Support

    5. Creating a new user account is an effective troubleshooting step because it can help determine whether the problem is related to the entire system or just to a specific user account. Please follow the steps below to create a new user account: Create a local user or administrator account in Windows - Microsoft Support

If the problem does not exist under the new account, the problem may be related to your previous user profile. In this case, you can try to repair or reset the profile of your existing user account, or continue using a newly created account.

    6. Check Event Viewer: Look for any error messages or warnings related to desktop switching or graphics in the Event Viewer. You can access the Event Viewer by typing "Event Viewer" in the Windows search bar.

I hope this helps. If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely

    Virtual Desktops

When I open an App, i.e. Excel, on one Virtual Desktop and then try and open an excel doc. from file explorer on a second virtual desktop the doc opens up and switches views to the original virtual desktop making using virtual desktops frustrating and time
consuming. Is there anyway to keep this from happening?

Virtual Switch Manger Unable to Create Default Switch in v1809

After upgrading to v1809 I turned Hyper-V feature Off then On. Since then the Default Switch no longer exists and the Virtual Switch Manager is unable to crate it automatically as it would normally. I can see the Default Switch appear for a few seconds in the Network Adapters, then its gone. This happens several time whenever I launch the Virtual Switch Manager.

I can create other virtual switches.
Once the Virtual Switch Manager lists the Default Switch with a Load Failed message.

I have used netcfg -d command and Turned Hyper-V feature Off/On several times with no success.

Suggestions welcome. Explorer crashing when switching between virtual desktops :) Thanks
