Encrypt contents to secure data not prompting for password

When trying to encrypt a folder using the "encrypt contents to secure data" option with Windows 10 Pro, it does not prompt me for a password when I go back to open the folder. Though the folder shows a lock on it, it just opens up like all the other folders without prompting for the password. How do I fix that?

    :)

  2. How to enable grayed out "Encrypt Contents to secure data" button.

Hi Kanishk. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

See here how to enable EFS in File Properties:

But be aware that I see lost files regularly when EFS or Bitlocker keys are lost or stop working.

A simpler method that has never had any files reported lost is to password the files using 7Zip, which I've used for ten years daily without any problems:

Feel free to ask back any questions. Please report back results for all steps given so I know what else to suggest if necessary.

How to enable grayed out "Encrypt Contents to secure data" button.

    Hi,

We would like to know more about this concern. Please provide the following information:

    • Does the "Encrypt Contents to secure data" option is disabled on all files that you want to encrypt?
    • When was the issue started?
    • Did you check if your computer runs the latest Windows update?
