    DISM Fails to Unmount WIM with "Access is Denied" Error 0x80070005 in Windows 11 24H2


    Hello,I’m encountering an issue while using DISM to unmount a WIM image.     Applying WIM image Error: 5 Access is denied

    Hey guys, please i could really use some help with this. So i was using Windows 11, made a backup where i got 3 WIM files. I went back to Windows 10 because the TPM 2.0 requirements, could not play League of Legends, Valorant because of the Vanguard Anti-Cheat needed TPM 2.0 support and my motherboard does not support it. Now that i am on Windows 10, i would like to get my stuff back from the backup i made on Windows 11. I did looked on internet and found some link to microsoft answers.

    I followed the instructions on a post where someone had a similar issue. I used, dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:G:\sources\Reconstruct.WIM /Index:1 /ApplyDir:C:\

    Then it showed me "Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool Version: 10.0.19041.1

    Error: 5

    Access is denied.

    The DISM log file can be found at X:\windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

    G: is my USB where the WIM files are and C: where is Windows installed

    I tried using the command in Safe mode, Safe mode with command prompt and Safe mode with networking. Same Error: 5 Access denied.

    DISM on build 14332 fails to apply image that has bash installed: Access Denied C:\Users\Eric\AppData\Local\lxss\rootfs\usr\share\perl

    I made a WIM with DISM of build 14332 on my computer. Trying to apply this image on my computer, DISM /Apply-Image fails with an Access Denied error. This happens applying the bash rootfs folder in the local AppData in the user profile.

    I managed to open the WIM file with 7-zip and remove the rootfs folder, after which it succeeded to apply the image.

    But since 7-zip needs to write the WIM from scratch as a temporary file, excluding the removed files meanwhile and then renaming the newly created WIM file afterwards, and happened to do it in-place on the same disk without an option to do it differently,
    that took several hours and almost 250GB disk space in total to complete.
