I recently ran this commandism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase according to Windows Documentation about WinSxS, this should have deleted superseded update files to reduce its disk size. Increased Winsxs Size Issue Caused By DISM CheckHealth/RestoreHealth

Hello All,

I have just encountered a strange issue whilst performing a monthly disk check-up on my 256GB SSD drive as I usually perform "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth" and "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" as to ensure everything is running optimally.

However, from today and a recent windows update then I have noticed strange behaviour and correlation with the physical size of the Winsxs folder and "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth" and "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth":

After I attempted both these scans then I noticed that the amount of used space for my SSD significantly increased by approximately 1GB and through the utilisation of Treesize it was identified that the size of the Winsxs folder jumped from 6.3GB to 7.3GB from the scans alone.

Another test was conducted as to correlate if the DISM scans were responsible on bloating the Winsxs folder and after the CheckHealth scan was conducted then the Winsxs folder was further bloated by 500MB:

Treesize has identified that a majority of the bloating resides in the Temp/InFlight folder of Winsxs

I am not sure if this is typical behaviour and/or how to reverse the issue as conducting startcomponentcleanup and ResetBase seems to have failed on debloating the Winsxs folder.

Any guidance or feedback will be greatly appreciated.

If you have already used that command and also with the resetbase switch, then the Winsxs folder will be at its minimum required size, no further items can be safely deleted from that folder

Are you very short of space on your drive, and why are you running dism on your system, are you experiencing errors on your Windows installation?

Place the "Image_health" folder on C - you are running the command 9 folders deep...
Place Image_health-sxs.cmd inside "image_health" folder
Image health sxs cmd was and is only a TEST cmd
Image-health is the normal cmd...

Also dism /scanhealth gives a better file report in the dism.log

Your damaged files appear to be that from a windows update, as windows update files are not on setup media..

step 1 delete current dism and cbs log files
step 2 run Image_Health.cmd - option 1 = scanhealth
step 3 run Image health - option 2 = restorehealth
step 4 run image health - option 3 = restorehealth /source
step 5 post dism.log and cbs.log (note: you can post logs as .txt > cbs.txt dism.txt)
