Windows 10: Create Windows 10 ISO image from Existing Installation

Discus and support Create Windows 10 ISO image from Existing Installation in Windows 10 Tutorials to solve the problem; Hi, Those answer file generators are really bad. My recommendation is to never use them. I've tested them, they leave you with an answer file... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Tutorials' started by brummyfan, Dec 10, 2016.

Create Windows 10 ISO image from Existing Installation

    Hi,

    I thought as much.
I'll get back to this if you don't mind but basically this is what I'd like to do:

I have an OEM DL layer DVD that I'd like to update using the current RTM AU version. The old version contains some updates for 10240 which are no longer pertinent to AU etc.

I've already done some basic stuff which seems to work alright but I'd like to understand all this better.

Either way, thanks a bunch for the kind reply.

    Cheers, *Wink

I am not sure if I understood you correctly? You have OEM Windows 10 version 1507 build 10240 on dual layer DVD, you would like to update it with version 1607 build 14393?

If so, you can do it easily, and quite fast because you can skip the excruciatingly slow Part Four; you don't have to create 14393 install.wim because that is already freely available.

    Steps involved:

    • Copy the full content of the 10240 dual layer DVD to a new folder on any hard disk, internal or external. Let's say you copy it to X:\ISO_Files
    • Mount 14393 ISO, copy the Sources\install.wim file to X:\ISO_Files\Sources, replacing the original 10240 install.wim
    • Create new ISO as told in Part Five in this tutorial

No answer file needed. Really easy, really fast. You will get an updated 14393 ISO image, with full content of your old 10240 DVD.

    Hi,

It is a DL DVD because it contains an awful lot of language packs. I updated most of them to current versions just for peace of mind.

The tut was made to prepare for the post ESD era. As it looks now the ESD to ISO method will not be available in the future, I do not believe that MS allows us to disable new UUP upgrade with registry hacks for infinite future. Sooner or later the UUP will become the only upgrade method, leaving Fast Ring Insiders without a valid method to create install media. That's where this method comes to rescue.

In addition, you can use the methods described to create highly personalised and customised ISO images with any Windows version and edition (7, 8, 8.1, 10) even if you do not need the latest Fast Ring build ISO.

I have almost finished installing my core set of applications so that I can build the .ISO.

Kari, as I understand the tutorial, having moved the \Users tree will not affect this modified .ISO generation, will it?

Are you doing Part One, Two or Three? Do you mean the installation you use to make new install.wim has relocated Users folder?

I managed to get all the way to an iso which wouldn't boot. *Sad

I can only say this: making this tutorial took so long because I checked every detail, every step several times before posting it. I did all three ISO methods before posting, reading the instructions as if I had no idea about what I was doing. All three ISO images I made were then tested on BIOS / MBR system as well as UEFI / GPT system. All booted without issues.

Do you get any error messages when booting? What kind of system you are trying to boot, a physical PC, virtual machine?

  10. fjk61011 Win User
I'm not saying your Tutorial is wrong rather that I made a mistake. Can't remember the error message.

I plan on doing the make .ISO from existing installation including user accounts and programs. The existing installation is the one I just did after something hosed, so it is pretty clean. Complete format of system and users drive, am remotely installing applications, then a few settings changes, driver updates, and I will be ready to capture.

Not at my computer ATM, responding via cellphone using TapaTalk. But I believe that is method 2.

Yes I didn't mean anything else than that the steps involved in all three ISO alternatives have been tested.

Which ISO you were trying to make (Part One, Two or Three), which build and edition you used to create install.wim, which build and edition you used to copy the rest of the setup files?

Usually you relocate the Users folder with component Shell-Setup > FolderLocations in answer file. I have to admit I've never done new install.wim from a system with already relocated Users folder. My way to it is a clean install keeping C:\Users where it is, then sysprep with answer file relocating Users to another drive.

If you are in no hurry, let me test this scenario first, I'll do it within next few hours and post back.

    First method. 14971. 14971.

I'm going to try again in Hyper-V.

I will be testing on my side as well. I'll robably test in VM first with no apps installed, just to be safe, and see what happens.

    Hi,

    Further to post # 19:

The OEM DVD contains two files in its root, modlist.xml and reclang.txt.
All else, as far as the root goes is as a normal W10 ISO.

    Starting with modlist.xml :

It's quite long but large chunks of it can be skipped as these are merely LP related.
The file also points to some drivers so I assume this is used in audit mode to modify the install.wim file

The there is also Recovery partition related stuff.

Question is, was this file created using SIM (I am a total newbie here) and if so can I edit it so I can use it to include the latest versions of these drivers and all version references are replaced by say 14393 (AU).

I only just reading that tutorial so bear with me.

Next there's this reclang.txt which looks much like a .INI file structurally:

Code: [MAIN] Languages=ENG ARA BRA BUL CRO CZE DAN DUT EST FIN FRN GER GRK HEB HUN ITN LAT LIT NOR POL POR ROM RUS SER SLO SLV SPA SWE TRK UKR JPN CHH CHS THA csup=07-24-2015 Recovery_Product=Windows 10 SP0 Professional 64bit Recovery_Build=10.0.10240.00 OS_SKU=Professional [BIM] Project=RDVDW10PX64M01 Language=ENG OS=W10 sku=Professional sp=SP0 PI_Automat_OS_Version=10.0.10240 PI_Automat_PE_Project=Windows10_Automat_SP0 PI_Automat_Mainpath=\\Sload\Ping\Automat\W10_Auto_process PI_Automat_Version=Automat_1.3.4.0 PI_Automat_Process=w7_module_master [PREINSTALL_Application] enable_feature_NetFx3=enable_feature_NetFx3 [PREINSTALL_Driver] RecW10Drv_Intel_Lan_20.2_PV=RecW10Drv_Intel_Lan_20.2_PV RecW81Drv_Intel_iaStorS_3.8.1.1009=RecW81Drv_Intel_iaStorS_3.8.1.1009 [PREINSTALL_Driver_Wim] Description=Into_Boot.wim Into_WinRE.wim Into_Install.wim WinpeDriver ARCHITECTURE RecW10Drv_Intel_Lan_20.2_PV=YES YES YES all RecW81Drv_Intel_iaStorS_3.8.1.1009=YES YES YES all[/quote] I wonder what the exact purpose of this file is and if this processed during setup or is this also part of the install.wim process ?

I have my flame suit on and I'm well aware I should read the tuts before asking questions.*Redface

Besides a Langpack folder in the root of the layout there's also a number of subdirectories in the "Sources" folder.
A folder named "$OEM$", then "SS".

The latter contains the following folders: "panther"

Here we find "unattend.xml" which looks like this:

Second main subdir of "$$" is a folder called "SETUP" directly followed "SCRIPTS"

    The structure:

There we see various scripts, commands etc. that do various tasks but I wonder what triggers these because I suspect that too is build into install.wim.

Bottom line, from my ignorant newbie view, this looks all quite daunting and the only thing I'd like to alter or skip although it doesn't seem to complain when left as is, is the Hotfix dir's content which is not needed for the AU version AFAIK.
    It's KB KB3074674.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3074674

In view of its purpose I may as well leave it.

To recap, the method I used (as decribed in posting # 19) works well enough but since the Intel driver packages are not contained in the standard AU install.wim these are of course not installed which results in a few yellow bangs in device manager.
Easy enough to fix as AU is now almost ahead of my machine as far as drivers go.

Still if I can include the latest ones in the custom install.wim for AU that would be great.

    O yes, there's a further folder there named system32 which holds OEMLOGO.bmp and Thumbs.db.

No idea why it's there as the actual logo used to show in the "System" control panel item is the same file masquerading under another in %windir% as the unattend.xml file will reveal.
That file resides in the root of the "$$" folder.

What intrigues me is how such an OEM distribution media gets created and if there's a relatively easy way to upgrade such media with an existing ISO as say serving as the backbone for this.

Now I'm going to delve into:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...e-sysprep.html

If someone's convinced I'll find 90% of the answers to my questions there then saying so is helping too. *Smile
