    Sms characters

The message body length in a single SMS is 140 bytes.

The default character encoding "alphabet" is a 7-bit character set, and you can fit 160 7-bit characters in 140 bytes.

When you use characters outside the default alphabet, the the 16-bit Unicode character set is used; you can fit 70 16-bit - two bytes - Unicode characters in 140 bytes.

N91 problem sending SMS with non English characters

The phone is switching to two-byte Unicode encoding for SMS characters, becuase of the Greek characters.

The default SMS character set (alphabet) is using 7-bit characters, and a single SMS can handle 140 bytes (one byte is 8 bits), and you can fit 160 7-bit characters in 140 bytes.

When using Unicode (16-bits or 2 bytes per character), then you can only fit 70 Unicode characters in 140 bytes.
