Windows 10: Cannot transfer my license to another computer after the previous got completely broken.

I've purchased Windows 7 home premium in 2013 or 2014. Upgraded it to Windows 10 for free and this year the laptop that it was installed on died completely. Tried to install windows 10 on another computer using my license, but it doesn't activate saying i don't have a valid license. how can i activate it if clearly that old device wasn't linked to my microsoft account logged onto it to find no devices on the list. Still have the box with the installation dvds and the license number.

I did it a bit differently but you gave me the lead.

I used a existing non-valid key just to make the upgrade occur. Once completed, I went to Settings and found Windows without Activation (clearly expected).

Then I went to Troubleshoot for the license and it gave me an option of "Hardware Changed". I used it and selected my previous license of Windows 10 Pro that was operating on my previous device and clicked Activate. Now I got my license back!

I assume the old device wont be activated now, but who cares since it is never going to operate in the first place (as I said in the question, the device is broken and cannot even be started).
