C:/Users "size" volume is larger than whole disk while "size on disk" is much smaller

My C:/Users shows 540 gb of "size" and 31gb of "size on disk" while the C disk only has 146gb. My laptop runs properly but I don't think this is normal. Is it an error or something that can be explained?

    :)

"Size on disk" is much larger than actual size

    Hi NelsonXT,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

This is caused by the Cluster size (allocation unit size) set on the disk, I always find the default NTFS settings to be the most efficient,

As a basic understanding, if the cluster size is set to 1MB and a file is 1.1MB in size, it will use 2MB or 2 clusters, because it cannot fit in 1 cluster, that is why 'Size on Disk' will be larger than actual file size.

Window 10: C drive disk size reduces automatically.

My suggestion would be to reduce the size of the new volume and move the unallocated space next to the (CC:/Users "size" volume is larger than whole disk while "size on disk" is much smaller :) and extend (CC:/Users "size" volume is larger than whole disk while "size on disk" is much smaller :) into the

    that area.

You might want to do a Disk Cleanup first including cleaning the system files.

The Disk Cleanup app is included in all apps under Windows Administrative.

Reduce disk size (Inspect SCSI )

Hi, I'm David an independent advisor and user just like you. I'll do my best to help you with this.

The answer is you have to reduce the size on BOTH sides.

Step 1) Within you virtual machine you need to go to Disk Management and reduce the size of the partition(s) on the drive you want to reduce - you want to end up with space left at the "end" of the virtual disk. This is the space you'll be able to recover.

Step 2) From your Hyper-V host you need to edit the virtual disk and use the Shrink option to reduce the size of the physical disk (as far as your VM is concerned it's a physical disk), and that would reduce the size of your virtual disk file on the host.

If you are increasing the size of the virtual disk then you do it the other way round - increase the size of the virtual disk on Hyper-V, then go to Disk Management inside your virtual machine and you'll find there's more space available to expand your virtual
    volume.

    Regards,

    David
