MS never did it before on older OS's , why would they start now? This is why one should always make an image of their system before doing any kind of upgrade.

  2. Did you read your own answer before posting it? How are you going to get to your image if you can't get into safe mode, most people don't have several pc's like we do. On less you mean, 3part image or one you can get to by recoveryDVD(which most people dont have either)!

You could boot from your Windows 10 installation media to advanced startup using OPTION FIVE in this tutorial.

Afterwards, you could do a system image recovery if you had created a system image before.

I found that if you physically turn off your machine immediately after the cyan windows logo appears (before getting to the log-on screen) two times this brought up the recovery mode, so that might help in the situation you mentioned.

So, I'm having a similar issue where the screen is black before windows boots (I know it's a driver issue for a fact). problem is I never backed up any of the important files on my notebook (and yes. I know. Stupid.) so will booting in safe mode from an SD card be possible? Also without entirely formatting my drive?

  9. I updated to Windows 10 Pro x64 Build 10586 via WU from the previous W10 version. Now when I click on the Restart button under Advanced Startup it just does an ordinary Windows restart. I do not get the various options that should follow like in your examples. All the other ways also do a Windows restart. How can I get this to work like it did before I updated to W10 10586? I did an sfc /scannow and while it found some errors it didn't fix this problem. I did a clean boot which didn't help. Perhaps some modules need to be registered or a Registry change. Restart works as it should under a clean install of the same version of W10 under a VM. Any help will be appreciated.

Someone suggested this 'bcdedit /set {globalsettings} advancedoptions true' but that restarts Windows and gives me the list of options as if I pressed F8. Close but no cigar.

  11. I already tried the shortcut and that also just restarts Windows. I tried all the different ways to do an Advanced Startup restart and I all I get out of them is a normal Windows restart. Really has me baffled.

Odd. Are you able to boot to Advanced Startup with installation media like in option 5?

That method works fine although I used my USB stick with the previous version of W10. I'll create a USB stick with the new version and see what happens but I really expect it to work.

I also tried updated W10 using the Media Creation Tool. That also screws up restart as well as causing other problems. This is why I went with WU for the update.

There's got to be some parameter somewhere that controls this. Maybe a Policy sort of thing. I'm counting on you Brink ;-)

  15. Do all the various methods all use the shutdown command? If so maybe I need to register it or do something else to it?

A clean install is low on my options especially if I don't run into any other problems. I always have my USB stick. I still think there is an easy fix for my problem.
