Windows 10: Apps can only play audio through external speakers and not through headphones.

I can only hear audio through the internal speakers but not headphones, All the headphones work on other devices. The headphones appear as a sound output device. If I run the troubleshooter, sound is restored to the headphones for a few minutes but then the problem recurs.

headphones play but do not register as a device and external speakers keep playing

i plug in my headphones and the realtek popup tells me i have plugged a device into the audio jack (also how do i keep that from popping up and making a tone every time?) and audio plays through mu headphones but audio also plays from the external speakers.
additionally i cannot find the headphones listed as a device. i am using skullcandy headphones connected by a m-m cable and a hp pavillion.

Sir, this problem persists with audio as well as video, when ever i play any video or audio on any player the internal speakers are working but headphone or external speakers are not working.
