  2. Desktopini created instead of a folder renaming

Every time I try to rename a folder on my PC (Windows 10 Pro), instead of renaming the file, it creates a desktop.ini folder, and inside of it is the following information

    [.ShellClassInfo]

    LocalizedResourceName=

After LocalizedResourceName= is the name of the folder that I renamed it to. So if it was Folder1 and I rename it to Folder2, that file will say:

    [.ShellClassInfo]

    LocalizedResourceName=Folder2

... but the actual foldername will still be Folder1

Searching the Internet lists a bunch of random suggestions, none of which work. Anyone know why this happens? I'm pretty close to abandoning File Explorer, as it seems to be the cause of this issue.

  3. Unable to create a new folder or rename a folder

    Hi Edver,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft community.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. I'll certainly help you with this.

I would like to let you know that you may not be able to rename or add a new folder from Quick access. It will allow you to open the folders that are frequently used, recently viewed files or the files/folders that are added to
    Quick access.

If you are unable to create or rename files/folders in other folders as well, then I would suggest you to run a SFC scan.

System File checker (SFC) scan is done to check if there are any corrupted system files that could be causing this issue. Kindly follow the below given steps:

    • Press Windows key + X, select
      Command prompt (Admin)
to bring up elevated Command prompt.
    • In Command prompt type sfc /scannow and press enter.
    • Restart the computer.

Hope this will help you. Keep us posted with the status of the issue to assist you further.

    Thank you.

A question about distinguishing between creating a file or folder and renaming it

Can't create or rename folders in Windows 11

I can't create a folder (with my own folder name) or rename a folder in Windows 11 Pro 64. Note that this is a new issue; everything was working fine up until a couple of days ago.

    Here are the steps:

    - Click New > Folder

    - The new folder is created and the folder is created with the New Folder highlighted and ready for the folder name

    - I type in the folder name I want, such as "My Folder Name" - hit Enter

    - Dialog box appears: "Can't find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name."

    - I click the button on the dialog box for "Try Again"

    - Dialog box appears: "The file or folder does not exist."

    - The folder I just created is now in the file system with the folder name "New Folder"

    - If I then try to rename the folder from "New Folder" to "My Folder Name", the same dialog box appears from above 'Can't find the specified file'

    Troubleshooting steps I've already done:

    - My computer is up to date (if anything, I think this problem may have started after a recent Windows Update but I'm not sure)

    - Reboot (no joy, problem still persists)

    - I am the administrator and I have full control and read/write permissions

    - This problem exists no matter where on the system I try to create a folder. "C:\", "D:\Documents", etc.

    - If I try to delete the folder, it deletes normally.

    - I can successfully rename the folder using a command prompt.

    - If I try to rename a folder from within an application (e.g. Excel), I have the same problem

    - If I try to rename a file (an actual file, not a folder), the file renames as normal

    Any suggestions?
