Windows 10: 1st gen NPU users won't get AI features on 24H2?

As we all know that 24h2 update for windows 11 is rolling out gradually for general consumers and as microsoft has already declared that the update will come with some great AI features with mind blowing fancy names. But there is a condition that the user must have a compatible NPU of at least 40 TOPS. So, does that mean consumers with lower npus like those in the 1st gen core ultra processorswith around 11 TOPS NPU won't be eligible for AI features on 24H2 especially live captions with translations?? If that so the first wave of NPUs in the industry will come of no use! microsoft should def

Samsung to Strengthen NPU Capabilities for Future AI Applications

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that it will strengthen its neural processing unit (NPU) capabilities to further extend the reach of its artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.

In line with its focus on next-generation NPU technologies, Samsung plans to create over 2,000 related jobs worldwide by 2030, which is about 10 times the current headcount. The company will also expand upon its existing collaboration with globally distinguished research institutes and universities, and support the nurturing of future talent in the field of AI, including deep learning and neural processing.

“For the coming age of AI, Samsung is committed to delivering industry-leading advancements brought to life by our NPU technologies,” said Inyup Kang, president of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics. “As we leverage our differentiated technology, close partnerships with global institutes and active investment in top talent, we are excited to take future AI processing capabilities to the next level.”

Samsung introduced its first NPU in the company’s premium mobile processor, the Exynos 9820, last year and plans to continue offering advanced on-device AI features for high-performance mobile chips. Applications for Samsung’s NPUs will expand into areas such as automotive processors that power in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), as well as next-generation datacenters optimized for big data processing.

The System LSI Business and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology — Samsung’s R&D arm — together plan to extend and evolve the company’s current NPU research into novel AI hardware technologies such as neuromorphic processors that aim to operate at the level of a human brain.

DirectML: Accelerating AI on Windows, now with NPUs

We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with Intel®, one of our key partners, to bring the first Neural Processing Unit (NPU) powered by DirectML on Windows. AI is transforming the world, driving innovation, and creating value across industries. NPUs are critical components in enabling amazing AI experiences for developers and consumers alike. An NPU is a processor built for enabling machine learning (ML) workloads that are computationally intensive, do not require graphics interactions, and provide efficient power consumption. These new devices will revolutionize how AI transforms our day-to-day experiences. We are excited to share that early next year we will release the DirectML support for Intel® Core™ Ultra processors with Intel® AI Boost, the new integrated NPU.

DirectML is a low-level, hardware abstracted API that provides direct access to hardware capabilities of modern devices, such as GPUs, for ML workloads. It is part of the DirectX family—the Windows graphics and gaming platform—and is designed to integrate with other DirectX components, such as DirectX12. DirectML integrates with popular ML and tooling frameworks, such as the cross-platform inference engine, the ONNX Runtime and Olive, the Windows optimization tooling framework for ML models, thus simplifying the development and deployment of AI experiences across the Windows ecosystem. By extending the hardware acceleration capabilities to include NPU support in DirectML, we are opening new possibilities for AI on Windows. DirectML with NPU support will be in developer preview in early 2024, along with the latest ONNX Runtime release, with broadening support over 2024.
