Problems with Audio on Windows 11

    6/3/2022 - RESOLVED for a Dell Vostro 5880, i7 10th Gen, Win 11 Pro

I used a product called LatencyMon (Home Edition) (Resplendence Software - Advanced System Tools and Developer Components) to analyze the system for suitability of real-time audio and other tasks as it tests and measures interrupts to process latency.

It noted two issues, the Realtek WLAN and CPU Throttling.

I disabled the Realtek WLAN driver in Device Manager and disabled CPU Throttling from group policy manager.

The primary fix was disabling the Realtek WLAN. Since this is a desktop connected via ethernet, I do not use the WLAN.

I tested the fix on two different Win 11 Pro builds in my Vostro 5880 and on my wife's Vostro 5880 Win 11 Pro.

The sound on all 3 builds that have current updates but with the Realtek WLAN disabled now work without dropouts, static and pops.

The Dell support desk wanted to continue having me troubleshoot the issue because Dell engineering would not get engaged to troubleshoot the Dell updates listed below. I was still working with a support manager on a resolution other than having me do Dell's work when I found LatencyMon on another blog. I worked for both Texas Instruments and Hewlett Packard field service and this issue would have been escalated to engineering. At least Dell Support kept the case open and a manager was looking at another resolution path. I believe that Dell needs to rethink the Engineering Engagement policy.

    4/25/2022 Important Update

The sound problems are being caused by DELL updates. Yes, Dell updates. After working with Dell support for over 2 months and reloading windows on a replacement Dell Vostro 5880 i7 10 gen of the same build, I replicated the sound issues.

Rebuilt the system to pure Win 10 with basic Dell software that comes with the system. No other Dell updates.

Win 10 Pro version update to 21H2

    Version 21H1 / Build 19043.1586

    Experience Pack 120.2212.4170.0

Sound issues happened after updating this build with the Dell updates listed below.

Dell is refusing to escalate the issue to engineering as they want me to troubleshoot further to find the specific offending update(s) and any interdependencies. Since 4 of the updates are URGENT and impact security I would not feel comfortable running the PC without them.

    Dell Updates:

    • URGENT - Intel-Management Engine Components Installer MPGT1
    • URGENT - Network, Ethernet & Wireless Realtek 8723De WiFi and Bluetooth Driver
    • URGENT - Video NVIDIA GeForce GT10xx/GTX ....
    • URGENT - Dell Bios Vostro 5880 1.82
    • Recommended - Network Intel PCIe Ethernet Controller Driver
Rolling back the Bios did not help.

A newer Dell Bios update did not fix the sound issues either.

Backing out the Intel-Management Engine Components Installer MPGT1 update improved the sound but did not resolve all of the issues.

Dell did send out a Tech and replaced the main board. The Tech said he has seen this issue and hardware did not fix it.

The replacement system I tested had the same issue so I sent it back.

2/1/222: I have one year old Dell Vostro 5880, Win 10 Pro with no audio issues until the last MS updates from January (21H1) and Dell audio and Bios updates. The audio started to crackle/pop and stutter. I use either a DacMagic 100 USB DAC to an integrated amp or Sennheiser 660s headphones, listening to FLAC 5 recordings, YouTube music and Tidal. Same audio issues on the USB port and on the headset ports. Upgraded to Win 11 Pro (21H2) and the audio crackle/pop and stutter just got worse. All system drivers, BIOS, etc. are up to date. All sound settings have been changed per recommended troubleshooting hints - no help. I have two almost identical Dells and they have the same sound issue after migrating to Win 11.

I tried restoring an early January backup with Win10, 20H1 (that had all updates) and one to 21H1 both no help. Even tried uninstalling some of the updates, no help. The only other rollback I have would be to Sept 2021 (no way). I want to use Win 11 as it has some great new attributes. Looking at the blogs and this one page with over 1500 views is a key indicator that this is a pervasive issue especially since there were audio issues documented by Win 11 beta testers.

2/3/2022 Update: Just tested in safe mode. The audio works OK in safe mode. Played FLAC 5 music files via Media Monkey player and the sound was great. Rebooted out of safe mode and crackle/popping and stuttering came back. Went into Device Manager and disabled all of the drivers one at a time that were disabled in Safe Mode, no help, still popping and stuttering.

2/4/2022 Update: Just got off of the MS Support Chat

The representative was very nice; however, the representative recommended I reset the Win 11 upgrade installation by using System Recovery option that would reload all of the audio drivers. The representative stated there is an option to keep the applications, but there is not. In addition, the audio works OK in Safe Mode with only the Realtek Audio driver enabled. In regular boot, I disabled all of the audio and other drivers that were disabled in Safe Mode and there was no change, still had static on the audio.

So, support wants me to wipe my installation and have me reload all of my applications not just on 1 system but on 2 and that would take me days and many hours just to fix an audio issue that should not exist. The crackle/popping audio is an ongoing issue with Win 11 21H2 and Win 10 21H1 so Microsoft needs to create a repair method to update and reload all of the audio drivers without doing the nuclear option of a clean Win 11 installation. Maybe a tool to clean the registry of duplicate or conflicting entries and remove and reload compatible audio drivers. Ya think? Lastly, my two OS backups are not really viable since they have the same updates to 21H1 and 21H2 that appear to have triggered the sound issues.

2/6/2022: Over 2 hours on the phone with next level MS tech support and a very nice representative. Similar troubling shooting processes with same result, popping and stuttering on the audio. They suggested I boot into safe mode and document the Services that were disabled and disable the same in regular mode to narrow it down to an offending service (just like I did for the drivers) . I did this and no change. Ran CCleaner and updated the Realtek audio driver (non-Dell certified), no help. Rolled back any changes.

2/7/2022: After another re-install of my latest Win 11 backup the sound improved a little. I wanted to ensure that the changes made during testing were back to square one. I then downgraded the sound output to 24 bit 44100, this helped slightly. Still have random popping as if playing a vinyl record and some stuttering when opening other windows like a browser. Listening to single guitar blues or Adele you never know when the music will be interrupted with a popping sound (a click). I do know this was not an issue with Win 10 20H1 version before MS and Dell January updates. Dell support will be contacting me back this week as well for extended troubleshooting. This is to include reverting to Win 10 original build and testing as updates are installed.

2/8/2022: Dell regular support could not resolve the pops/clicks on the audio. Sent the issue to next level support. They had me prepare a USB to reinstall Win 10 with a certified Dell version, 20H1. So, I completed the OS reinstallation using the Dell recovery steps.

Dell Vostro 5880, 1 year old, i7, 16 GB ram, 512 Gb SSD system drive, Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060.

Installed Win 10 per Dell instructions to build 20H1

Full Dell and MS updates (except 21H1) as instructed

Updated Dell drivers using ADR (no updates needed)

Still static on the audio except in safe mode

Sent system log files to Dell

2/9/2022: Both Microsoft and Dell support are now pointing fingers at each other. Microsoft wants to close out the support ticket and Dell is saying they are not responsible for Microsoft updates. My only saving grace is that the official Dell recovery image has bad audio. Will see later this week the next steps from each company.

    2/9/2022 Updated Final Thoughts:

I will be re-installing my Win 11 backup since the really lousy sound is on all of the versions. There is no reason to stay on Win10 as going back to the original Win 10 did not work and I really like the new Win 11 menu system. Could there be an audio chip issue as well as a driver compatibility issue with Win 11 and updated Win 10 versions? Audio static, stuttering and some distortion on PCs with Realtek audio appears to be the common thread since November 2021 for Win 11 and earlier for Win 10. After reading many blogs, this does not appear to just impact Realtek but also Sound Blaster and others.
