    My Optical drive does not work and unable to read disks but it is recognized in BIOS


    I am totally puzzeled, for about 6 months I can not get my optical drive to work. In File explorer is show that it is there and when I insert a disk, it will still tell me to insert a disk and nothing happens. So i bought a DVD/CD portable disk with a USB connection and it does not work. I suspect that there are some drivers missing. I did un install and re install the drivers several times but no luck, please help me.

    Optical Drive is not Recognized in File Explorer or Bios

    If your optical drive is not detected by the BIOS, Windows has no chance of recognizing it, because the BIOS tells the operating system which devices are connected to the motherboard.

    If your drive isn't detected by the BIOS, that's a sign that the drive's data cable or its power cable are loose or disconnected (or the data cable is connected to the wrong header.) That's why it's not being detected by the BIOS.

    If this doesn’t work try this fix by Kapil Arya:

    Try these steps:

    1. Open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges.

    2. Type the following command and hit Enter key:

    reg.exe add “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0” /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

    3. Exit the Command Prompt and reboot. Insert a disk to test and the optical or DVD drive should be visible now.

    Optical Drive is not Recognized in File Explorer or Bios

    My optical drive is not recognized in File Explorer or Bios after Windows Update. I am pretty confident this is due to the windows update. FYI, Dell support tool says drivers up to date.
