Windows 8 Upgrade Streamlined to 11 Clicks

For those who upgrade between succeeding versions of Microsoft Windows, the upgrade installer can be cumbersome. There are way too many prompts and clicks. Microsoft is working to make the upgrade package of its next major version of Windows, for now referred to as Windows 8, streamlined to as few as 11 clicks. The new installer will be designed to perform most of its tasks without needing user input.

Microsoft will implement a new web-delivery method, where you purchase your Windows 8 license online, and the installer downloads your soft copy to you. It is pre-fed with your 25-character product key. Microsoft's next major Windows release is slated for 2012.

Question About KB5001716 In My Apps List In Settings

Thank you very much Manson for your clear and concise professional answer. I really appreciate you taking the time to investigate this and conveying your findings to me as I do not want Win11 forced on my Omen computer nor my wife's Envy laptop. We have already planned on buying a new HP Omen Desktop and Envy Laptop with Win11 preinstalled a few months after support ends for Win 10.

    Respectfully,

    Don

Question About KB5001716 In My Apps List In Settings

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern regarding the KB5001716 update and the potential for unwanted Windows 11 notifications or upgrades. If you're considering uninstalling this update, here's what you might expect:

    1. Removal of Windows 11 Notifications: Uninstalling the update will most likely remove the specific components designed to notify users about Windows 11. This means you should no longer receive prompts or notifications urging you to upgrade.
    2. Possible Stability Concerns: While the primary purpose of KB5001716 seems to be related to Windows 11 notifications, like with any Windows Update, there's a possibility it may contain other minor improvements or fixes. Removing it might have unexpected effects, though in most cases, uninstalling a non-security update should not cause major stability issues.
    3. Reappearance of the Update: Windows Update might detect the missing update and attempt to reinstall it, especially if your settings are configured to install updates automatically. You might need to "hide" the update to prevent it from being reinstalled. You can do this using tools like "wushowhide.diagcab," which was provided by Microsoft in the past to hide specific updates. However, it's worth noting that Microsoft occasionally retires or phases out the use of such tools.
    4. No Forced Upgrade to Windows 11: As of my last training data in January 2022, Microsoft has not indicated that they would force-install Windows 11 on Windows 10 machines without user consent. The KB5001716 update seems to be more about notifying users of the availability of Windows 11 rather than forcibly installing it. Uninstalling the update would likely prevent these notifications, but it shouldn't be necessary to prevent a forced install, as such behavior would be a significant departure from Microsoft's stated policies.
If you decide to uninstall the update:

    1. Create a system restore point before making changes. This will allow you to revert back to the current state if something goes wrong.
    2. Go to "Settings" -> "Update & Security" -> "View update history" -> "Uninstall updates". Locate KB5001716 in the list and uninstall it.
    3. Monitor your system for a few days to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Thank you for your patience and understanding! If you have any questions, feel free to leave us a message.

    Sincerely
