So I have a rather odd issue. I just built my new PC with the latest AMD CPU ASRock X870E Nova motherboard, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 64GB DDR5 Ram, and upgraded everything. But now, for some reason I can not explain, twice a day...once in the morning, and again at night....Windows does that "found new hardware" tone and opens up all my externally attached USB drives as if they have never been connected before at all. My WD 8TB drive, and a 4 drive USB external doc just suddenly open up windows for ALL drives out of the blue. I can not figure out what is causing this, or keep it from happening.

    :)

  2. Repeatable crash with external drive dock

I've found an issue with windows hard crashing while using an external drive dock. This originally occurred on windows 10 on a separate computer, but i've discovered it also occurs on a new computer on windows 11, and will occur with different drives in the dock. The only thing that remains the same is the hard drive dock.

The dock itself is a Orico 1 to 1 Clone Hard Drive Dock. This is the exact model here:

ORICO 2.5/3.5 inch USB3.0 1 to 1 Clone Dual-bay HDD and SSD Hard Drive Dock (6228US3-C)

I originally thought the issue was just something weird with my windows 10 install or a driver. But it still occurs on a new computer running windows 11. The dock works fine and i can copy files and clone drives, the issue arises once i stop using it and sits idle, it seems that after a certain amount of time when the drive would normally be put to sleep the computer will hard crash, no blue screen. This occurs every time and the only way to not crash is to unplug the dock once i have finished using it, before the hard drive would be put to sleep.

    Here is the event log:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xffffe20f58f6a050, 0xfffff80182ce2718, 0xffffe20f56b2daa0). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\Minidump\042323-22203-01.dmp. Report Id: dd56ea57-ffb5-4bb9-aa80-96d329124cd4.

I can provide the dump if that helps also.

    Cheers.

unrecognised external hard drive on Windows 10

Since you already reinstalled the drivers of the External Hard Drive, let's run the
Hardware and Devices troubleshooter as it can resolve your concern. You can do that by following these steps:

    • Press the Start button.

    • Type and select Troubleshooting.

    • Click on View all on the left panel.

    • Select and run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

If the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter doesn’t resolve your concern, we suggest that you change the letter of the External Hard Drive. You can do that by following these steps:

    • Press the Start button.

    • Type and select Control panel.

    • Select System and Security.

    • Select Administrative Tools, and a new window will appear.

    • Double-click Computer Management, and a new window will appear.

    • Select Disk Management that is located under
      Storage
      in the left pane.

    • Right click on the External Hard Drive that is not showing on the File Explorer.

    • Select Change letter and network path, and a new window will appear.

    • Select Change, and choose the letter that you want for the External Hard Drive.

After changing the letter of the External Hard Drive, we suggest that you reboot your laptop for the changes to take effect.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards.

Windows constantly "finding" new drives already in external USD dock.

Drive Spaces Not Finding Moved Drives When New Drive Added

I have a Storage Spaces pool with a single parity space created. I was adding a new drive. I'll call the drives OLD and NEW. I did he following steps over time:

    1. plug the NEW drive into an external drive dock

    2. add the NEW drive to the storage

    3. verified that NEW and OLD drive were in the pool

    3. shut down PC

    3. move the NEW drive to the internal bay

    4. move the OLD drive to the external drive dock

    5. turn on PC

Result: NEW drive shows up in storage spaces, but OLD drive is marked as missing from the storage space. Disk Management shows the OLD drive as a volume that is part of a storage space even though storage spaces doesn't see it.

To troubleshoot, I did the following:

    1. turn off PC

    2. unplug power from NEW drive

    3. turn on PC

Result: OLD drive shows up in the storage spaces, but NEW drive is missing as it is not powered on.

I can go back and forth connecting and disconnecting the power to the NEW drive and always receive the same result: the OLD drive in an external dock is recognized by drive spaces only when the NEW drive is not connected internally. If I put the NEW drive
back in the external dock and the OLD drive back in the internal bay, both work correctly.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be going on and how to fix it?
