I can't access my NAS drives in File Manager since a reformat and reinstall of Windows 11

I had to reformat and reinstall Windows 11 Pro, I did a clean install downloading Windows using Reset and setup it up as a new PC and everything went smoothly except I can no longer access my three NAS drives which all used to appear in File Manager and I could just drag and drop files between them. The Three NAS drives are a Synology, Terramaster and Buffalo and all of them appear in my router. The Synology does appear in File Manager and asks for my Username and Password but won't accept them and says they're wrong but if I try and access the Synology using a web browser and using the IP addre

  2. How can I get Windows 11 to search media file tags on a NAS drive?

    1. I have a TerraMaster NAS F4-223. (NAS = Network Attached Storage)
    2. I've established a mapped network drive (ZI can't access my NAS drives in File Manager since a reformat and reinstall of Windows 11 :).
    3. I have ~3 TB of media files on this NAS, and that have Tags on them (Right-Click -> Properties -> Details -> Tags).

Before I moved the files over to the NAS, I was able to use the basic Windows File Explorer to search on the Tags, and now when I search, it only does a basic search of the filenames and seems not to look at the Tags at all.

Is it possible to get Windows 11 to search media file Tags over a Network drive?

If it is not possible (as other posts seem to suggest at least with regards to previous version of Windows) why in 2024 is it not possible? Ugh.

  3. Accessing files over Network NAS drive

I bought a new laptop on Feb 1. It had Windows 10 installed when I got it.

I set everything up and installed my personal stuff and set the wifi adapter to "private" in the network and sharing options.

Everything was fine. I had direct access to my WD MyCloud NAS storage drive.

On Feb. 2, as I shut down for the night, there was an update. And the next morning, I had no access to my NAS drive.

The drive appears in the file explorer, under network, and several locations on the drive have shortcuts in the Quick Access menu, but nothing on the drive can be accessed, except through the web interface. There is no longer any direct access.

I have tried a large number of fixes I found through Google, including adding a credential and editing through services.msc (making a list of things "automatic" loading rather than "manual."

    Nothing has worked.

How do I get my NAS drive back?

Accessing files over Network NAS drive

    Hi ElsaFrohman,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Could you please help me with the below questions:

    • Which version of Windows you are using on both the computers? (To check, type: winver in start menu and hit enter.)
    • Do you have any error message while accessing the drive on network sharing?

I have reviewed the information provided by you and I appreciate the time you have taken to resolve this issue, I realize how difficult these things can be. However, let us follow these methods and check if that helps.

Method 1: Turn on SMB feature.

This issue can occur if the SMB CIFS File Sharing Support is not enabled or is enabled incorrectly. Just to make sure that everything is in-place for the network sharing, let’s go ahead and try the steps mentioned below.

    1. Press Windows
and R key together on your Keyboard.
    2. Type appwiz.cpl and hit enter.
    3. Click on 'Turn Windows Features On or Off' (upper left side of pane).
    4. Please scroll down and under
SMB 1.0 CIFS File Sharing Support
, check the boxes next to SMB 1.0/CIFS Client
and SMB 1.0/ CIFS Server. If the boxes are already ticked, please uncheck the box and check it again.
    5. It will ask you to restart your Computer. Please
      Restart it.

    Method 2: Provide the permissions.

If a user does not have the requisite permissions to access the drive, sometimes the permissions or the privileges needs to be assigned. I would suggest you to provide the
permissions to the NAS drive and check for the issue.

    1. Right click on the NAS drive, Select Properties.
    2. Select Security tab.
    3. Click on Advanced tab.
    4. Check the owner of the file, click on Change.
    5. Type in Everyone on Select User or Group, select everyone will give permission to everyone, if you want only the current user to have access, you can enter the current user name or the enter administrator, to give
      access to administrator only.
    6. Click on Check Name and OK.
    7. Check on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
    8. Click on Auditing, Click on Add, type
Everyone and give full control and click
      OK
      .
    9. Click on Effective Access, Click select user and Click on
Select a principle, type in Everyone and give
      full control
      and click on OK.
    10. Click on Apply and Click on OK.
    11. Wait for the permission to apply.
    12. Click on Advanced options again from the NAS Drive properties Window (same step from step 3).
    13. Click on Add, you might see change permission on your system, click on it and after that you will get the
Add option. Add Everyone with Full control, click on
OK and close all the Window.
    14. Close and reopen the file explorer, or restart the computer and check if you can access the drive.

    Method 3:
Adding PC's and IP-addresses to hosts file.

I would suggest you to follow the step 6 from the post on

If you would like me to provide additional advice, simply respond to this thread. I will get notified and I’ll reply to you as soon as I can.

    Hope it helps.
