Windows 10: Windows Activation Issue After Formatting: Previously Valid Key Not Working

I recently formatted my computer and tried to activate Windows with my product key, but it says the key is invalid. Before formatting, the key worked perfectly fine. I've read that it may need to be removed from the previous device, but since I did a full format, I can't access the old installation to do so.The reason I formatted was due to severe lag while gaming. I have the product key saved separately, so I didn’t enter it during the initial Windows installation. After completing the installation and setting up programs, I tried to activate Windows, but it keeps saying the key is incorrect.

Run CMD


1. diskpart
2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

2. select disk #
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.

Not only that, you can check your M$ account and see what devices are listed there, so you know if you can do a clean install or not. Do the upgrade, get it activated, verify that it is listed in your account, then feel free to do a fresh install without activation issues ever.

Win7 and Vista. It did not work with XP, OEM and Retail discs were different for XP(and anything pre-XP).

If it is already installed, you can enter it when you activate.

Is it saying the key is not valid or is it failing activation? A screen shot of the error it is giving you would help a lot.
