Black screen after trying to load old source engine game

I wanted to play an old ver of tf2. It had worked for me before but not this time. the thing with source mods is that they launch in low resolutions. so i put my display in 800 x 600 and when i launched it it gave me a black screen, again. i couldn't alt tab alt f4 or use windows key so my only choice was to close windows. now when i turn on my pc, it does the loading animation and then gives me a black screen, no cursor. ctrl shift b don't work and advanced repair options. my guess is it has to do with my nvidia graphics card because usually full screen and lower resolutions stretch to fit th

Steam Source Games Black Screen Bug.

I'm having this issue as well... I find that if you do this that you can get the games to (at the very least only just about) run:

Step 1: open your Steam library, pick a known iffy source engine game

Step 2: right click it and select "Properties"

Step 3 (holy crud, HL3 confirmed!): Select the "Set Launch Options" button in the menu and type the "-safe" (without quotes) flag in there

After that... try launching the game... it SHOULD show up in a 640 X 480 window. You can increase the resolution to match your DFP if a small box in the middle of the screen is too annoying but DO NOT USE FULLSCREEN MODE!! this appears to be where the bug lies,
Windowd and borderless modes are absolutely fine... hope this at least gets your games playable till either Valve, your GPU manufacturer or Microsoft fix their shiznit!

Oh... and a few quick questions: Are you running AMD or NVidia GPU hardware?... Do you have a Crossfire or SLI aware setup?... Also... are you running the latest drivers? Personally, I'm thinking it MIGHT be a descrepancy with windows 10 and AMD Radeon "Crimson"/NVidia
GeForce Experience driver architectures since the games themselves aren't really optimised for the OS and Windows 10's kernel is quite a bit different to Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 which use relatively equal kernels.

Temporary Black Screen, then no problem

@wolf2009: No, Loading screen not disabled. Would that have any effect on the 3 temporary black screens after windows loads? I'll give it a try tonight though.

@tigger69: I think I might have another AGP card to try. Do you think it could be the video card, as after about 5 minutes, everything is ok. If I can dig an old 6800GT out of storage tonight, I'll try it.

Thanks for some suggestions both of you.
