Microsoft account and phone number linked

Microsoft account password recovery requires two verification codes being sent using two different verification methods. Each Microsoft account has at least two verification methods, the phone number and additional email address which are asked and required when you set up a new Microsoft account with a new hotmail.com or outlook.com email or using a third party email.

When the thief who got your phone tries to recover your password, all your verification methods / security info phone numbers and email addresses will be listed for him to select one. OK, the thief naturally selects your phone number, gets the code sent as a text message, and enters it.

But, clicking Next after entering the code he needs to select another security info contact (phone / email) from the list to receive second verification code.

Password recovery is not possible with just your phone, the system is clever enough to make it impossible by requiring two codes being sent to two different phones and / or emails.

You can add as many phone numbers and email address as you wish as security info contacts at https://account.live.com/proofs/mana...&refp=security. I wholeheartedly recommend that you add at least another security email address; if you only have one phone number and one email added, those which were required when you set up the Microsoft account, and that thief got your phone, the recovery would be as impossible to you as it is to him, you both having access to just one of required two verification methods.

  3. Not Receiving code when adding phone number in Microsoft account

You can visit How to recover a hacked or compromised Microsoft account(microsoft.com) to troubleshoot your Microsoft account, and here is an example I tried.

    Can't get a verification code

    Troubleshooting verification code issues

There are a number of possible explanations for why verification codes don't always arrive. Read through the list of the most common causes, and see if any of them apply to you.

    Select your choice:

    Using a mobile device?

    • If you are unable to receive a verification code text message on your mobile device, try sending it to your email address instead.
    • If your phone blocks texts from unknown numbers, change your phone settings, then choose I don't have a code. We'll send another verification code.
Were you able to get a verification code?

    No

Did the verification code go to your junk folder?

    • Check your junk email folder for a message from a Microsoft account, and use the code sent to you. Valid verification codes come from an @accountprotection.microsoft.com email address.
    • Mark @accountprotection.microsoft.com as a trusted sender to receive your verification code in your inbox.
Were you able to get a verification code?

    No

Does your alternate email address end in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com?

    • If so, you're using one Microsoft account to verify another Microsoft account. This can make it tricky to keep track of which one you're signed in to. When you sign in to the second account (to get the code sent to that email), most browsers automatically sign you out of the first account (the one that's actually requesting the code).
    • To get your verification code:
      1. Using a browser in privacy mode, sign in with the first account. This lets you stay signed in to both accounts at the same time.
      2. When you're prompted to enter the verification code that was sent to your alternate email address, don't close the browser window.
      3. Open a new window in privacy mode. Ctrl + Shift + P is the shortcut for InPrivate Browsing in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer. If you're using a different browser, check that browser's help for info about privacy mode.
      4. In the new window, sign in to your alternate email account and look for the message from the Microsoft account team. Copy or write down the verification code from the message.
      5. Return to the window that is asking you for the verification code. Enter the code and follow the instructions.
Were you able to get a verification code?

    No

Does your phone block texts from unknown numbers?

If so, change your phone settings then choose I don't have a code. We'll send another verification code.

Were you able to get a verification code?

    No

Are the right phone numbers or email addresses showing as verification options?

    Yes

Sorry, we are unable to help

Verification code - I never get the code

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

It sounds like you're having trouble receiving the verification code needed to create a new PIN on your Windows device. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:

Step 1: Confirm Your Phone Number

Make sure the phone number you have registered with your Microsoft account is correct.

    1. Check Your Microsoft Account Details:
      • On another device, go to the Microsoft account security page.
      • Sign in with your Microsoft account credentials.
      • Under Security basics, check the phone number listed and ensure it is correct.
    Step 2: Troubleshoot SMS Delivery

Sometimes messages can be delayed or blocked for various reasons. Here are a few things to try:

    1. Signal Strength:
      • Ensure you have a good signal on your phone.
    2. Check Message Blocking:
      • Make sure your phone isn't blocking messages from unknown numbers.
    3. Restart Your Phone:
      • Sometimes restarting your phone can help with receiving delayed messages.
    4. Try Another Method:
      • If SMS isn't working, try selecting an alternate method of verification (e.g., email verification).
Step 3: Use an Alternate Email for Verification

If you have an alternate email address linked to your Microsoft account, you can use it to receive the verification code.

    1. Request Code via Email:
      • On the verification page, select the option to receive the code via email instead of SMS.
      • Check your email inbox (and spam/junk folder) for the code.
    Step 4: Update Security Information

If the above methods don't work, you may need to update your security information.

    1. Add a New Phone Number or Email:
      • Go to the Microsoft account security page.
      • Under Security contact info, select Add security info.
      • Add a new phone number or email address.
      • Follow the verification steps to confirm the new contact information.
    2. Request Verification Code Again:
      • Once your new contact information is verified, try requesting the verification code again.
    Step 5: Contact Microsoft Support

If you're still not receiving the verification code, you may need to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

    1. Visit Microsoft Support:
    2. Explain the Issue:
      • Provide details about your issue, including the fact that you are not receiving the verification code via SMS.
Step 6: Use a Trusted Device

If you have previously signed into your Microsoft account on another device, you can use it to bypass the verification step.

    1. Sign In on a Trusted Device:
      • Use a device where you've successfully signed into your Microsoft account before.
      • Go to the settings and attempt to update your security information from there.
If you continue to experience problems, contacting Microsoft Support directly will likely provide the most effective solution.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards
