Windows 10: Some times my office files Word and Excel get disappear after turning on the laptop.

Hello friends,Because I use several laptops, I have to store my files on a hard drive Adata ssd or a flash memory.I open a Word file on a laptop and make changes to it or add things to it.The next day when I plug my hard drive into another laptop or the former one. The Word files that were used on the last time get disappear!I have had this issue with word and excel files!It does not happen every day; it happens 2 or 3 times a year.I had this issue with flash memories and my friends told me to use hard drives, but still this problem exists.Please help me with solving the issue, or tell me th

I am working in Windows 10 home version 1909.
Can not afford an upgrade.
My Office files are old, dont know what version.
Cant remember how I updated this laptop to Windows 10 months ago.
PROBLEM:
I can not open any of my Office files; Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
I looked for my Windows old file as suggested, and it IS gone.
Haveing a small breakdown, will step away and return in a few...ANY DIRECTIONS AND ANSWERS WOULD BE GREAT!!!!!! PLEASE WRITE THEM IN STEP BY STEP FORMAT. Thankyooouuuuuuuu!
