  1. Slow network speeds when transfering a file to a NAS

Hello all! I'm facing an issue which I need help troubleshooting... When transferring a file, I'm facing slow network speeds 40MB/s on a GIG-e connection to a NAS. Key features of the issue at hand - The PC in question has two partitions, both running slightly different versions of Windows 11. The newer partition is connected to the WAN, and the older is LAN only. I'm getting 100MB/s transfer speeds on the LAN-only Windows partition. So, the hardware is the same, but the software configuration is different. I think this rules out a hardware issue. - I ha

File Transfer Speed from Windows 11 to Synology NAS is VERY SLOW vs. Windows 10

I have a new Windows 11 PC and I'm noticing that the file sharing to my Synology NAS is very slow vs when I transferred files from my older Windows 10 PC.

    File Transfer Speeds:

    • Windows 11 to NAS (DS1520+) = 11.5 MB/s
    • Windows 11 to Windows 10 = 112 MB/s (much faster)
    • File size = 30GB

    Note:

    • Windows PCs and NAS are all Ethernet connected on 1GB home network.
    • Running: Windows 11 Pro 23H2
    • Running: DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 5

Any suggestions on how to speed this up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  3. NAS slow and clunky

    Hey there, @copenhagen69

I think it might be a good idea to start the troubleshooting by testing the HDDs in your NAS using their brand-specific diagnostic tool or their status through the NAS dashboard interface.
How big are the files you are dragging/dropping? Usually transferring a large amount of small files or copying GB-large files could significantly slow the transfer speed.
I'd also suggest you to check the Network status of the NAS and make sure it shows 1000 Mbps. It could also be your Ethernet adapter, their speeds vary depending on the quality and line issues.
If possible, you could also try using a Gigabit Ethernet Switch to improve the transfer rate within the whole local network (including your computers).

Keep us posted. *Smile Slow network speeds when transfering a file to a NAS :)

    NAS transfer speeds

    Hi there

what are you using as a NAS box. Windows 10 should be just fine. The other thing is if you are using those electrical thingy's for Ethernet connection they can be hideously variable in performance.

I'd check your Network stuff first - the Wifi option works for me (wifi Ethernet bridge with 2nd router). If your network connection is fine I'd suggest a cheap RAID controller and improve HDD performance - but if you've got SATA connections the max theoretical throughput should be at least 3 GB/s - on modern HDD's could be 6GB/s -- although you won't actually get that speed from the HDD's themselves.

Can you also test running a file transfer from your computer to an external USB HDD -- the bottleneck might actually be in the PC !!! and not the NAS. USB2 external device will probably transfer at 20 - 40 mb/s , USB3 external HDD probably 100 - 150 mb/s (these are for portable self powered HDD's).

If the computer is slow then that's it -- NAS should be fine. If you have USB ports on the NAS see what HDD transfer is directly by connecting the device to the NAS - most decent NAS boxes will have at least one USB 3 port.

    Cheers
