  1. Why did my desktop files and shortcuts get exploded when I turned one drive syncing on?

I have had One drive for 10 years and this laptop for 4. I have always been confused about sync to one drive and have always windows user since MSDOS 2 or 3 just backed up my files manually. But the other day the offering to turn on sync came up again and I foolishly? tried it, thinking, again, how hard can it be to have everything backed up and ready to be loaded onto a new computer. To my horror, it started eating up all my bandwidth which is low and my desktop icons suddenly exploded into new patterns with new folders and files all over. I quickly turned off sync temporarily and tried

  2. One Drive Sync Issues with Desktop Shortcuts

I am encountering an issue with One Drive syncing shortcuts placed in a folder on the desktop. This is occurring on a fresh install of Windows with all current updates applied. One drive indicates sync issues with the following message: "No access permissions
to the item. It appears that you do not have access permissions to the item. Ensure that you have the right permissions to allow the item to sync."

I found that by doing the following on every shortcut, I can get them to sync:

    • Right-click shortcut: Properties: Security: Advanced: Change permissions
    • Disable inheritance: convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions on this object
    • Enable inheritance: apply
    • New permission entries are added for SYSTEM, Administrators, and user account with inheritance from c:/users/[user account]
At this point the shortcut will sync. I can remove the four old permission entries with inheritance: none, or leave them there. it doesn't appear to make any difference.

It is obviously rather time consuming to have to do this for every shortcut created and put into a folder on the desktop.

Can someone identify what the root issue is and how it can be fixed without needing to edit permissions on each and every shortcut?

    Any help appreciated, thanks, Rob.

  3. Desktop chrome shortcut icons turned into blank papers!!!

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

It's possible that the antivirus app you installed, RAV endpoint protection, caused the issue with your Chrome shortcut icons turning into blank papers. Antivirus apps can sometimes interfere with the functioning of other programs, including changing the appearance of icons.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Restart your computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix minor issues with icons.
    2. Rebuild the icon cache: The icon cache is a database that stores the icons for all the files and programs on your computer. If the cache becomes corrupted, it can cause issues with icons. To rebuild the icon cache, follow these steps:
      • Open File Explorer and navigate to the following folder: C:\Users[Your Username]\AppData\Local
      • Locate the "IconCache.db" file and delete it (you may need to enable the option to show hidden files and folders in File Explorer settings).
      • Restart your computer.
    3. Reset Chrome shortcuts: If the issue persists only with Chrome shortcuts, you can try resetting them by following these steps:
      • Right-click on the blank paper icon and select "Properties."
      • In the Properties window, click on the "Shortcut" tab.
      • Click on the "Change Icon" button.
      • In the "Change Icon" window, click on the "Restore Defaults" button.
      • Click "OK" to save the changes.
Please note that these steps are general suggestions, and it's always a good idea to back up your important files before making any changes to your system.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further updates, thanks.

    Best regards

  4. Why did my desktop files and shortcuts get exploded when I turned one drive syncing on?

    Desktop Shortcut Icons

    Hi Mik-Dav,

The desktop shortcut created for a specific website should bear the website's actual logo. With what you've experienced, there could be something wrong with how the shortcut was created.

If you've created the shortcut by selecting Create shortcut, then we suggest that you try the other way, that is by dragging the website icon that appears in the address bar to your desktop. Follow these steps:

    • Using Internet Explorer, access a website.
    • Once the website opens, you will see its icon in the address bar.
    • Click and drag the icon on your desktop.

The website shortcut bearing its actual logo should now be saved on your desktop.

Let us know if you need further help.

    Regards.
