Windows 10: Flash drive is constantly slowing my computer down by stopping popups and preventing downloads

I haven't been on my laptop in like 1-2 months because my charger broke, but I came back and immediately started to do downloads because I was doing that before. I have a 230GB flash drive and I have been using it for my games, mainly for sims. I know it's starting to sound like it's dealing with an EA problem but it's actually not once I continue more. I was already going through some downloading issues, and I realized that once I let my game download on my regular computer it works. What i did was i went into the services and stopped "Windows Update" and then i noticed that my bandwidth wasn't being used..I noticed blinking lights on my modem and figured out that it was downloading something..

Browsing sites had become slow. But of course now i have to download updates for it..So what's proper way of doing it without it downloading in BG constantly without notification..
