Windows 10: How to switch from school or work email to personal email without logging in?

I just graduated and my school has locked my account.I want to log in with my personal account but since I can’t log into my school account I can’t change it to personal account.Is there a way to fix this?

Duplicate Personal & Work/School Email Account Problem

Hi Emily- Thank you for your response.

1) I have closed/opened the personal account a couple of times as I've struggled with this issue. The most recent closure was this morning, so I'm still 30 days away from the permanent elimination of that account.

2) My company purchased 365 business products, yes. And yes, this is a custom domain email.

3) Settings/Accounts/Access work or school: Yes, my 'work or school' account IS listed here, with the option to 'disconnect' or 'manage', which opens this account page in accounts.live.com.

Under Accounts/Email & accounts:

- The old personal account is listed under "accounts used by email, calendar and contacts". If I attempt to add a new account here, and enter my email address, it sends a code to Authenticator, and then I get "Oops, something went wrong...there is a problem with your microsoft account. To fix this, sign in to account.live.com from a browser." (I suspect the error is that again, it's pushing me back into the personal account, and the account is slated for closure).

- "Accounts used by other apps" lists both the personal and work/school accounts. I removed the personal account here, but it has no effect on the big picture problem.

I should mention that I can easily tell the accounts apart because the email address name displays with a capitalized first letter in the work account and not in the personal account. But when I 'add account' with the capitalized email, it doesn't matter - the Authenticator request somehow gets directed to my personal account, which yields the error message.

 

Personal and Work/School email accounts

I would like to understand why Microsoft distinguishes between personal and work/school email accounts.

I find this distinction most annoying. Every email account I have had over the past many years has always been used for both personal and business purposes. (I started with CompuServe!)

I also find that Outlook 365 doesn't recognise an "onmicrosoft.com" account as a Microsoft account. Go figure!

Occasionally I have setup a Microsoft email account for a corporation usind the date of incorporation as the Date of Birth.

A few things I would like to clarify and understand better:

1. How long ago did you close out your personal Microsoft account?

2. How did you turn it into a work/school account? Did you purchase a Microsoft 365 business products? Is this a custom domain email?

3. If you go to Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School, do you see anything listed there?

Once I gather this information, we would work toward a solution next. Thanks!
